In september 2018 it was time for another upgrade. Nikon released the D850. While the D810 apparently was a nice step forward compared to the D800, the D850 was a giant leap. 45 Megapixels, ISO going through the roof while keeping high quality and overall better autofocus.

The even bigger improvement was in the housing. I was tempted to go for the rolls royce in housings, the Seacam system. But the people at onderwaterhuis.nl advised me to check out Nauticam as well. While the hugyfot housings look a bit sleeker, with the rounded shape compared to the more box like appearance of Nauticam, the Nauticam system is slightly more advanced.

Opening and closing the housing is done by 2 flips, instead of unscrewing 2 bolts, several triggers and buttons are place in easier locations for a diver and the port system has a nicer attach & lock mechanism. Another major change is going from all-electric flash trigger cables to optical ones. I was hesitant about those, since they seem to be more fragile and prone to errors, but all the contrary, these cables work like a charm.

The 45 degree nauticam viewfinder was also one of the best purchases I made. It gives you a way nicer position in the water, especially when doing wide angle shots.

I had already bought 2 INON Z240 strobes, as a smaller addition to my Ikelites. These flashes are not as powerful, but they are a lot easier to travel with.
